Mandarin Palace
——Modernize the classic
Background Story
Mandarin Palace is a korean chinese fusion restaurant that i frequent with my family serving some of the best food throughout my childhood. Unfortunately without a main website the only information i can find about the restaurant is through yelp. The restaurant relies on Yelp to provide users and customers with information about the establishment but why source through a third party website to get information about a restaurant. I took advantage of this opportunity to create a design for the business that way customers and users can navigate directly to the restaurant.
User Persona
Customers at restaurants want to be happy. They want good customer service by welcoming employees. They want to be able to enjoy quality food without having to wait a long time. Consistency and quality will always play an important role in restaurant customers.
How can I create a service that is dependable, minimal and make sure that all information is displayed on the website. Maybe entice the website user with food pictures and have hours of operation on front page. The way users that navigate here will immediately know when and what time to visit the restaurant.
It was hard to create a concept of a restaurants website without any experience with customer service sites. Finding the right inspiration and seeing what other restaurants are doing is a key factor that played huge role in finding the right style and atmosphere that I wanted to create for the website.
Mood Board
Restaurant websites have an underlying theme of class and quality. Using darker tones and pictures that capture a more sincere and distinguished look. The color scheme and concept of using food and indoor seating is a great way to maybe entice customers to take a look at the menu or get to know more about the restaurant.
Using the inspiration I gathered from the moodboard, I wanted to start on some sketches that will give me a general idea of what kind of layout that works best for the site.
Hand Draft
Most restaurant websites have a very similar structure
-
A Landing Page (main page to website with a big picture that engages consumer)
-
Brief overview of restaurant (about us)
-
Maybe hours of operation
-
Deals and promotions if there are any
-
Footer/ Social media
After a brief sketch of the vision of my website I thought it was a good idea to move to a low fidelity (lo-fi) wireframe to conceptualize the site better.
Wireframe
After a couple revisions from my original sketch. Moving to a website with only one page seemed like a better idea.
The restaurant doesnt include a lot of information that requires an extensive website with multiple pages. I think by reducing the amount of pages even by 1 reduces the margin that a user will lose interest and navigate out of the website. I think by creating a one page website that displays all information is a better user experience in the long run for the business
Landing Page
After coming up with a low fidelity wireframe this is the final mockup with color that I was able to come up with. The color scheme of the website gives it a classy and modern feel. The dark colors blend well with the pictures and help with setting the ambience.
While the Mandarin Palace website design provides a modern website to one of my favorite restaurants, there are other features and part of the website that I would like to focus on in the future.
Design a page that lets users contact the business through email.
Gain user feedback and iterate design aspects on the front page.
Creating a more extensive and well designed menu.
